Indicator 10B: The teacher works with other school professionals to plan and jointly facilitate learning on how to meet diverse needs of learners.
I meet with my Special Education Cooperating Teacher, School Counselor, and two Special Education Educational Assistants. In this meeting, we talk about specific students, their needs, and interventions and techniques that may or may not work for them. We collaborate and work together to find ways to meet each student’s needs. This helps us to be all on the same page so the students receive the structure and routines they need everyday. One day in specific, I brought up an incident with a student that was troubling to me. The other teachers noticed something different about that student as well. Together, we were able to plan how to meet this student's needs based off each of our experiences with them to help this student succeed both in and out of the classroom.
Indicator 10D: The teacher works collaboratively with learners and their families to establish mutual expectations and ongoing communication to support learn development and achievement.
This is an app called SeeSaw that I help my Cooperating Teacher navigate and keep up with. This allows my Cooperating Teacher and I to collaborate and work with the parents of our students. This app allows us to take pictures of students’ work, leave notes, attach files, etc. to each of their parents. This allows parents to see exactly what their students are doing in the classroom so they are involved in their child’s learning process. Parents can leave comments or write directly to my CT and I with any questions or concerns for their child that immediately get sent to us. This has strengthened our relationship with parents tremendously as we are able to have daily conversations with them through this app. Parents have laughed at some of the activities their students have participated in, have left comments about how much they love some assignments, and have been able to strike up conversations with their children at home as post-assessment.
Indicator 10H: The teacher uses and generates meaningful research on education issues and policies.
This photo is a picture of my senior research study that was done on the link between parenting and academic achievement. I chose this topic because of a pattern I noticed in my Special Education classroom and wanted to find ways I could better help my students succeed. This research shows issues of education and the importance of support from the student's home both as a teacher and as a parent. This taught me more about student's influence from home and how I can help them succeed in the classroom if they are not receiving that support from home.
Indicator 10S: The teacher takes responsibility for contributing to and advancing the profession.
This picture shows a thank-you letter from BYUH faculty member, Dr. Karen Latham, in a panel given to an EDU 212 class full of potential future teacher candidates. This panel allowed me to answer questions candidates had, give students advice on student teaching, and share personal experiences related to my teaching experiences. Sharing these experiences showed students the joy that can come from student teaching and from educating others. This panel helped to advance the profession as it helped influence their decision to become educators and got them excited for their future teaching careers.
